MERIT BADGES

Scouts can earn more than 135 merit badges, each of which symbolizes proficiency in a skill or area of study. Scouts may earn merit badges during camps, troop meetings, or from registered adult Merit Badge Counselors in their community who have expertise in the subject. In order to achieve the Eagle Scout rank, Scouts must earn a minimum of 21 merit badge, 13 of which are required.

Merit badges subjects range from traditional Scoutcraft skills like backpacking, archery, and first aid; to occupational subjects like dentistry, plumbing, and journalism; to academic and technical fields like composite materials, nuclear science, and genealogy; to civic subjects like American cultures, citizenship in the community, and family life; to life skills like emergency preparedness, home repairs, and personal management.
